Prof. dr. Dennis DeletantRomania is still struggling to reconciliate itself with its communist past. Key point in this struggle is the access to the archives of Romania’s former secret service, the Securitate. Without access to these files, lustration, meaning the process of verifying if public officials have been offices or informants of the Securitate, becomes impossible. By placing almost the entire archive under custody of the National Council for the Study of the Archives of the former Securitate in the beginning of this year, an important step has been taken to secure complete and public access to the files. A step that could only be made after years of legal bickering. Now Romanian society has the duty to address its demons from the past, otherwise it is condemned to face them in the future.
